Exercises You Can Do with Just a Towel

It is possible to get in shape without all of the expensive equipment on the market. Instead, all you need is a simple towel, although it is helpful to use one that is strong enough to handle your workout. The benefits of working out with your towel include targeting different muscle groups in an effective manner and adding variety to your exercise routine. Always warm up before exercising to protect yourself from strains and sprains.


Resistance Exercises


When performing the following exercises, you will use your own body for natural resistance.

Exercise 1: Towel Raises
Stand with your legs shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent. Hold the towel stretched tightly between your hands up over your head. Bring the towel all the way down to your knees, creating resistance. Lift the towel back up over your head. Repeat for 30 seconds and take a short rest before completing two more sets.

Exercise 2:  Standing Towel Pull Ups
Stand with your legs shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent. Hold the towel stretched tightly between your hands up over your head. Bring the towel down to your collarbone, creating resistance. Lift the towel back up over your head. Repeat for 30 seconds and take a short rest before completing two more sets.

Exercise 3: Towel Squats
Stand with your legs shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent. Hold the towel stretched tightly between your hands up over your head. Squat slowly, bringing towel down all the way in front of you. Stand back up, and raise the towel back over your head. Repeat for 30 seconds and take a short rest before completing two more sets.

Stabilizing the Core Muscles


This set of exercises will build your core by helping you to balance on a slippery surface. Perform 3 sets of 8-10 reps for each exercise, with a 45 second break in between each set.

Exercise 1: Slide and Squat
Fold towel into a square and place it on the ground. Place your right foot on towel, feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent. Put weight on your left leg as you slide your right foot out all the way and back in—keeping your left leg still. Bend at the waist and lean body forward so arms are almost touching the floor as you do the exercise. Repeat on each side.

Exercise 2: Ab Slides
Bend over, putting your hands on the towel in front of you, keeping your knees at a 90 degree angle. Slide towel forward with your hands so that your body is completely stretched out with your arms on the floor above your head. Slide back into your starting position.

Exercise 3: Ab Slides- Variation                            
Stand with your feet on the towel. Squat down so your hands reach the floor in front of you. Slide legs back until you are in a push-up position. Slide legs back into standing position. Repeat.

Exercise 4: Chest Towel Slide
Get into a push-up position, with towel folded lengthwise on the floor in front of you. Hands should be shoulder-width apart on the towel. Bring hands together, crushing towel together, using your chest muscles, simulating the dumbbell fly.
